I was watching my Bluray of the Grateful Dead Movie this weekend and somehow wondered for the first time:

What's up with the fire guy? Is he a crew member hired to do this? Somehow he's creating giant fire balls with a lighter and some kind of liquid. In addition to looking dangerous (huge fireballs on stage five feet away from Phil) it's kind of distracting.

My first dead show was in 81, and the light show was pretty mellow. Maybe this was just for this show (winterland 74)?

Someone here will know.

The movie isn't fresh in my mind, but...

During St. Stephen someone on stage set off a very well-timed fire cracker or cherry bomb at my first show (Fillmore West, 1970-06-04). You can hear it on my tape.

The next time I saw them (Winterland, 1971-05-30) there must have been a fire guy, as there were occasional shooting flame towers about 15-20 ft high, and no I hadn't been drinking the Kool-Aid at this rescheduled $2 benefit show.

re: east coast fireworks!

a few cool-sounding fireworks I taped at the outdoors shows on the east coast during the summer of '73:

whistle chaser - just as Loser is about to begin
cherry bomb - as Dark Star transitions into He's Gone, 17 seconds later
cherry bomb - during Truckin' jam as Phil-solo is about to begin, at 9:25
pack of fireworks - after the jam, as Sugar Magnolia pauses for ending chorus, at 6:20
